APRIL 2008: TFFC COMMITTEE VOTES TO RUN TWO OLD BOYS TEAMS FOR SEASON 2008/09 The Management Committee met at the Jolly Badger Harvester in Edgware and voted unanimously to run THREE teams for the 2008/09 season. Temple Fortune last ran three teams during the 2003/04 season when the Second Team was still in existance in the MSFL. The First Team will play in the MSFL Second Division, the new Old Boys 'A' Team in the Masters First Division and the Old Boys 'B' Team in the Masters Second Division. The Management Committee meeting was held following several weeks of open discussion via the newsletter and emails which brought a good response from quite a few members. Says Chairman Nigel Kyte: "The Committee realises that we cannot stand still by keeping things as they are for next season, which would probably have resulted in one of two groups of players leaving the Club. We recognise the commitment shown by the 35 plus age group as much as the current Old Boys players, and want to continue providing football for everyone under the TFFC banner. We also recognise the importance of retaining the MSFL team, the survival of which is paramount towards the future of the Club. The Firsts have the backbone of a young and competitive team and we need to build on that." The knock-on effect of the momentous decision has brought about changes in the Club's management structure. The Club has reduced the running of each team from three serving Officers to two, whilst each team will have a non-Man.Com. serving Manager. Each team will have a Team Secretary and an Admin Secretary, which means that the role of Assistant Team Secretary per side has been made redundant. The changes will come into effect after the completion of the current playing season and offices will be filled at the AGM on Sunday 8th June. The Club has also considered playing kits for next season the First Team will wear the superb 'Bekhors' all-yellow and navy kit with new red and yellow socks (clash colours: 'Bekhors' green and white vertical striped shirts), the new Old Boys 'A' team will use the splendid 'Ellis & Co' all-red and yellow kit (clash kit: 'Turnhold' yellow and navy shirts), whilst the Old Boys 'B' team will be receiving a brand new yellow and red playing kit sponsored by James Ryan of Ellis & Co (clash colours: 'Bekhors' green and white vertical striped shirts). "In making this decision," continues Nigel in upbeat mood, "we are aware that this it is an ambitious yet positive step forward in the right direction, and I trust that all players will play their individiual part in making this work. We need at least 60 players, so now is the time to start passing the word around and recruiting sufficient players for each side. Let's not sit back and wait for it to happen... I ask each and every one of you to bring new, talented players to Temple Fortune. Recruitment starts NOW!" TFFC.CO.UK: 100% TFFC THROUGH AND THROUGH! The Club is pleased to report that the TFFC website has now been switched to a new host, ICUK, which means that every page is now linked to the domain name of tffc.co.uk, rather than defaulting to toucansurf.com. Says Chairman Nigel Kyte, who looks after the website: "We've finally resolved the ongoing problem of having all pages apart from the home page linking to toucansurf.com. I never got around to switching during the season because I could not afford to be offline for a few days but now it has finally been sorted out during the closed season. It was an irritant which went on for far too long!" WEBSITE PLANS: Team photos of previous seasons we are in the process of scanning in team pics from the Club's large library of photographs to place on the website. Another project being considered is to include league tables covering Temple Fortune's MSFL and MMFL participation going back to 1976. "A time-consuming task, much like collating the results pages which took a few months," says Nigel. "I have to type-set every season going back to 1976/77 when we first started, so it's a project which will take quite a while." The TFFC website is one of the most comprehensive football sites around at this level (and much higher) so please take a browse around it and enjoy there's info galore and much much more! www.tffc.co.uk
ANDY SOUBER AND STEVE FEIGER JOIN THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE FOR 2007/08 All of last season's Officers are continuing on the TFFC Management Committee except MICHAEL KAYE who sadly stepped down after doing a very good job as First Team Assistant Secretary for two seasons. The Club wishes to sincerely thank Michael for his excellent work for the First Team which helped him win the Clubman of the Year award twice. He is being replaced by ANDY SOUBER who returned to the Club last season after several years break. Andy was unanimously elected at the AGM on June 24th and will be working in tandum with Garry Simpson, the pair being aided by Mike Shorvon. Another new Officer on the Committee is STEVE FEIGER, who has served on the Committe in the past in a couple of different positions. Steve takes on the newly opened role of Old Boys Team Administration Secretary, whilst MIKE SHORVON is now specifically the First Team Administration Secretary, rather than the general role of Admin Secretary last season. This means that there are now officially THREE officers helping to run each team, ensuring that the Club will remain superbly run next season.
NEW SCALED MEMBERSHIP FEES FOR HONORARY MEMBERS The FULL MEMBERSHIP (£60) and CASUAL MEMBERSHIP (£30) FEES for season 2007/08 will remain the same. Both fees will be reduced by £10 if paid within 14 days of receiving the membership forms. So no changes there for the third season running. However, the HONORARY MEMBERSHIP FEES are changing according to the number of appearances for the Club, which rewards loyalty with the introduction of scale of fees as follows: Members of The 200 Club (200 appearances for the Club) pay £40, members of The 300 Club pay £30, members of The 400 Club pay £20 and only Peter Kyte in The 500 Club will be exempt from paying a fee. The proposal, by Steve Feiger, was carried and replaces the flat £25 Honorary Membership fee which has been in place for sveral years. The WEEKLY MATCH SUBSCRIPTION FEE of £6 per player per match remains unchanged.
TRAINING AT PARMITERS Recently, the Club emailed a quick-fire campaign regarding training and the need to contact Garry Simpson urgently. Hopefully, EVERYONE adhered to the request and did just that. If you didn't, do not blame the Club if nothing is arranged. So if you still have neglected to contact Garry, here's another chance. Whether you can make Monday, Wednesday or cannot train at all, PLEASE CONTACT GARRY NOW. Garry's email address is garry@turnhold.com.
ADMINISTRATION OFFICERS' REPORTS, SEASON 2006/07 THE CHAIRMAN'S REPORT For Season 2006/07 has been one of the Club's best for many years. Both teams had been challenging at the top of their respective divisions, and both finished with positive win/loss records. Our Masters XI were runners-up in Division 2 whilst the MSFL XI lost out on the same achievement merely on goal difference. The season commenced with the Club celebrating 30 years in Maccabi football, In a fitting move to commemorate Temple Fortune's inaugural league season in 1976/77, we returned to our original league colours, with a splendid modern version of green and white sponsored by Gary Bekhor. This was the first instance where one sponsor had kitted out 2 teams at the same time and our grateful thanks go to Gary for his generous sponsorship. The kits were unveiled at the Gala Morning event held at Hillingdon Borough FC on 3rd September 2006. The occasion incorportaed a pre-season friendly between our teams and the presentation of awards for the previous season, with food and drink thown in with the compliments of the Club. Although pro-Club Dinner supporters would have been disappointed that we had to cancel the proposed Dinner just before the World Cup commenced, nobody would disagree that the Gala Morning was hugely successful. 34 players attended, more than had ever attended a Club Dinner in the past. The event confirmed that the recipe of football, awards, food and drink on a Sunday morning is far preferable to the hit and miss concept of end-of-season summertime evening Club Dinners. The website featured the 30 years commemoration theme considerably which made the move from yellow and red to green and white all the smoother. Changing traditional colours after 20 years was not to be taken lightly and the Club gave the occasion admirable credence thanks mainly to the Gala Morning event and website. Onto the playing side of the Club. The First Team started well enough but endured a slump which threatened to induce a relegation struggle. However, the team's recovery seemed to coincide with the arrival of Ben Isaacs, whose contribution proved to be a vital importance. He deservedly went on to win the Player of the Year award and finished as leading goalscorer as well, a fine personal double in his first season with the Club. The Firsts became a tough, dogged side which was hard to beat, as a number of 1-0 victories emphasised. A healthy mixture of youth and experience ensured a remarkable recovery which saw the team frustratingly miss out on the runners-up spot only only goal difference. But given the team's plight near the bottom early on, we all would have settled for a position of mid-table stability come the end of the season. Sadly, Mike's cruciate knee injury is a big blow to the Club and we wish him a speedy recovery. The Old Boys enjoyed their best Masters campaign since we first ventured into the MMFL in 1999, as proud founder members. Bringing in David Summer, Graham Meyer and Robert Botkai into the Old Boys fold helped fill key positions and made the team more balanced. Winning the first 7 league matches placed the Old Boys top of Division 2, a position they held when completing their final fixture in April. Only the points which London Maccabi Lion 'B' took from their remaining 2 fixtures prevented what would have been the Club's first championship success since 1986. However, beating LML 'B' in the first league fixture was the highlight of the season. The title hinged on the return fixture which through misfortune more than anything didn't go Fortune's way. All in all, the Old Boys were very unfortunate to miss out on a deserved title, but finishing as runners-up for the second time in 4 seasons was a splendid achievement. Administratively, the Club ran very well, tightening up with income collecting considerably. The use of preprinted collection envelopes, albeit in need of modification for next season, and accurate records in Microsoft Excel improved efficiency to a large extent. Matchday admin was improved with reduced fines and onfield discipline was satisfactory. So, to sum up, season 2006/07 was most memorable and an appropriate way to commemorate 30 years in Maccabi football by Temple Fortune Football Club, the MSFL's longest running current club. THE GENERAL SECRETARY'S REPORT Membership: We had 30 Full Members (24 in 2005/06), 3 Casual Members (10 in 2005/06) and 9 Honorary Members (8 in 2005/06), giving us a total of 41 members, which was 1 down on the previous season. There was 1 membership refund Perry Greenblatt which was the same number as the previous season. Registrations: We had 25 registered MSFL players, compared to 21 the previous season. With the Masters team, we also had 25 registered players, 4 more than the previous season. Of the 50 registered players in total, we lost Jeff Gotch, Perry Greenblatt, Nigel Grunberg and Ronnie Poole during the season. Pitches: We hired Whitchurch Playing Fields for the second season in succession and used it 12 times out of 15, which is 80% usage, comapred to 11 out of 15 the previous season (73%). On one occasion we hired Whitchurch to North London Juniors FC, so we wasted only 2 Sundays which is our best record for years. In the Masters League, we hired 26 pitches, of which 19 were on grass and 7 were on G3 astrograss pitches. Discipline: We had 12 cautions (10 MSFL, 2 Masters), compared to 9 cautions collectively the previous season. There were 2 sending offs compared to no dismissals the previous season, although one was subsequently downgraded to a caution. League fines: The MSFL team collected one fine of £6, which is our lowest total for many seasons. This compared to £23 the previous season, £40 in 2004/05 and a staggering £150 in 2003/04. The improvement over 4 years has been excellent and go to Mike Kaye and Mike Shorvon in particular for keeping MSFL fines to a minimum. Subs collection: As agreed last year, the Club introduced a new system for collecting and monitoring weekly match subs. Pre-printed envelopes were used by Mike Shorvon and Steve Feiger and passed on to Nigel who recorded the figures using spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel. Therefore, the collection of subs was accurate and evidently solved the problems encountered over the years. However, the envelopes tended to tear and need to be replaced by stronger envelopes or money bags for next season. Club Dinner: Following the success of the Gala Morning which included the Awards presentation for 2005/06 last September, we did not arrange a dinner for the second year running. Although we were forced to postpone the Awards morning 2 weeks ago, we are repeating a Gala Morning-type event at Hillingdon Borough FC in September. In conclusion: Overall, the season ran very well. Most pleasing was the improvement with match subs collection and low MSFL fines. The Club has continued to be run very efficiently, showing an annual improvement for a number of years now, and thanks go to all Officers, together with Steve Feiger for his invaluable help. We hope to maintain the high standards of efficiency next season. THE ADMINISTRATION SECRETARY'S REPORT As most of you know, we finished fourth in Division 3 with the same amount of points as the team that finished runners-up in the league. Our lack of goals proved to be costly. I think the season was one of the most enjoyable seasons I have known. We played some excellent football at times and thinking back both games against Redbridge were both great team efforts. Also our game against South Mancunians when we won 4-0 was a great team effort. Garry Simpson as team captain was tremendous. He has a great gift of maximising every bit of effort and skill from every player. Mike Kaye as his assistant was also outstanding, both as a player and also very encouraging and influential on the pitch. I don't particularly like naming individuals but two people I feel should be mentioned for an outstanding season. First, Ben Isaacs as our player of the season in his first season playing for Temple Fortune and I think he was immense. Tremendous potential, never stopped working, never stopped running and more important, a nice young man. Second, I want to mention our goalkeeper Phil Small. Phil was a strong and highly charged goalie, who up to the last game of the season, had not finished on the losing side. I thought his commitment and enthusiasm were outstanding. Finally, congratulations to Nigel yet again for your award as Team Secretary of the Year. It was an honour which you thoroughly deserved.
THREE-STRIKES POLICY CONTINUES DURING SEASON 2007/08 Certain problems were highlighted at the 2006 AGM which repeatedly occurred during the 2005/06 season to the point of becoming a nuisance. Punctuality at meeting places/matches, failing to respond appropriately to emailed messages, and retaining Club playing kit instead of returning to the kit bag have all caused too much annoyance to those running the teams. Therefore, as part of the Schedules of Fines, the Club introduced a new 'three-strikes' policy, which will be enforced with fines and possible suspensions for reported offences. This is how it works: If the offence is reported to the Club, a warning will be issued after the second offence. The fine will be imposed after the same offence is reported for the THIRD time. Thereafter, after a further warning, the charge will be under SoF No.13 for persistent offending. Each member will receive the Schedule of Fines together with the membership/registration documents soon. We want this Club to be run as efficiently as possible and feel that this is a step forward by reducing certain bad habits such as lateness and late emails. There is no place for discourtesy to those running the teams punctuality, emailing and returning kit are requirements by every player, each week. The scheme ran through the 2006/07 season and will continue for the next campaign.
TEAM MANAGEMENT OFFICERS' REPORTS, SEASON 2006/07 THE FIRST TEAM SECRETARY'S REPORT 2006-2007 has been a tricky season for Temple Fortune's First XI for various reasons. I attempted to introduce a squad rotation system but unfortunately this didn’t always work out. The main reason being that the players don’t always appreciate being rotated, or often I played players out of position toaccommodate others. Sometimes I played weaker players to ensure everyone played football. In addition, it doesn’t help that we don’t meet up to train together during the week and as a result, we are not the fittest team and early season took a few games to get going. However there are some promising signs for next season, one of them being that there are some skilled new players who joined the club. For the 2007-2008 season I intend to concentrate on the team's fitness levels and keeping the squad together. Due to absentees and injury it is important to have cover in all positions, but some weeks we had 10 players and on others, 15. Finally, just a few words of thanks to Nigel and Lynne for their great support, organisation and energy in making TFFC one of the best run clubs in all the divisions. THE FIRST TEAM ASSISTANT SECRETARY'S REPORT The First Team played well this season finishing joint second (on points) in a tough division. We started slowly with our ageing team needing a run of games to achieve match fitness. I would suggest that next season at least three competitive friendlies are played prior to the start of the season. We gave some excellent performances against Redbridge (twice in the league), against North London Raiders (twice in the league) and in our performance of the season away to South Mancs where we won 4-nil. Special mention must go to Phil Small and Ben Isaacs. Phil who comes out for crosses with immense presence and bravery (why he cries like a girl when he trips over is a mystery to all of us!) Ben who runs like a train into every tackle and has made and scored goals this year from complete lost causes. Because so many in our team are over 35 we have had to hold teams with our aggressive and committed tackling and then score on the break (using Ben's speed) or rely on our excellent corners. Next season we need a few more younger players in all departments to allow us to dominate possession and take the game to the opposition for longer periods. Goal of the season goes to Gavin Levy's winner against Redbridge. Best of luck for next year. THE OLD BOYS TEAM SECRETARY'S REPORT With regard to the 2006/07 season, I must say that my first reaction was that of disappointment after being on top for most of the season but a few bad results cost us dearly. But in hindsight I think it was a fantastic performance by everybody concerned considering that our main opposition have far more players to choose from. Hopefully we can improve on this in the coming season. I would like to thank David Goldberg for all his help throughout the season and would like to stress that his award was thoroughly deserved. Also I would like to thank all of the team for a terrific effort and sincerely hope we can take it forward in the coming season. I am available if wanted next season! THE OLD BOYS TEAM ASSISTANT SECRETARY'S REPORT This season was one of the most enjoyable for a long time. We got off to a great start and what with a much stronger squad and with Graham Meyer and also James Ryan who improved as the season went on, we were top of the League until the last 2 games of the season. Unfortunately we lost several players during the season (Perry Greenblatt, Leon Pernikis, Nigel Grunberg and Neil Revens) due to the fact that they weren’t getting enough regular football. However, with injuries and the disappointingly few appearances of Geoff Isaacs and the non appearance of Alan Davidoff, by the end of the season we were lucky to have 12 or 13 players available. Looking at the potential squad for next season, we’ve only got about 16/17 players. So we do need to recruit 2 or 3 more. Same old, same old moans and groans about the same players, but I guess things will never change no matter how many times you tell them to mark a man etc. etc. I must mention the subject of punctuality on a Sunday morning. I don’t know if any fines were sent out, but it’s just not acceptable for the same people to be late nearly every week Phil Friend, Allon Shick-Maier. Others were late for various reasons, but they had always let me know beforehand. I must also thank Nick for the job he did last season. It’s a thankless task trying to manage the team and keep everyone happy. Although I do think we will have to discuss our policy on the use of substitutes, before the start of next season.
FIRST TEAM FINISH FOURTH IN MSFL DIVISION 3 ON GOAL DIFFERENCE South Mancs collected the three points required to leap-frog Temple Fortune and Oak Wood after bottom-placed NLJFC pulled out of the remaining Third Division fixture. This means that frustratingly the First Team finished in fourth place, level on points with the other two sides but taking fourth merely on goal difference. However, it is interesting to know that the previous season, Montana went up in 4th place from Division 3 so it is still possible that we may be invited to be promoted.
NORTHERN IRELAND'S MARIE KELLY TAKES FANTASY LEAGUE TITLE! MARIE KELLY of Belfast is the TFN Fantasy League champion for season 2006/07! Marie, who took part through her friendship with Nigel Kyte and his family, captured the title from STEVE FEIGER, the previous season's winner. With the appropriately named KELLY'S HEROES team, she managed to hold off Steve's close challenge to take the title by 23 points. The Club's General Secretary LYNNE KYTE took third place, one position higher than the previous season's 4th. MARTIN COLLINS, runner-up in 2005/06, finished half-way, whilst LAURENCE THORNE at least showed complete consistency by holding bottom place for the second season running! Another consistent performer was DAVID GOLDBERG who retained his 7th position again. Well done to STEPHANIE KYTE, who along with Lynne and Marie, won two Manager of the Month 'awards' during the season, showing that GIRL POWER thrives in the footballing world! Congratulations go to Marie for her splendid footballing knowledge and consistent team selection throughout the 38-week season. Thank you to everyone who took part. We will be running another Fantasy League competition for season 2007/08 so make sure you enter in good time!
WE STILL WANT YOUR FAVOURITE TFFC TALES & ANECDOTES The 2005/06 season was the Club's 30th year of participating in Maccabi football - particularly in the MSFL - an achievement of which we are extremely proud. During that time, we have been the longest running club to have been in the MSFL continuously. With Brixton Old Boys no longer existing under that banner (they merged with Ebor to become Brixton Eagles), only Temple Fortune has been members of the MSFL without a break since 1976. We are celebrating this milestone with a special feature on the Club's website, made up of past and present players' stories and recollections of their association with TFFC. We are still looking for more contributions, so please email appropriate stuff to the Club asap. >>>See what's been featured so far...
TFFC'S COMPLETE PLAYING RECORD With brightly coloured keys, here is the definitive summary of ALL matches played by the Club's three teams. Separated into league, cup and friendlies, the list includes totals season by season. With promotions and relegations shown, together with cup bests, this provides interest to any keen Fortune fan!
SILVER LINING AS TF PLAYERS ENJOY CLOUD 9 AT UPTON PARK! No less than FIVE Temple Fortune players took part in the Maccabi Community day's Masters match in May 2007 at Upton Park, home of West Ham United. Played between two teams drawn from Masters League players, the match included Stephen Brower, Steve Feiger, Geoff Isaacs, James Ryan and Bryan Silver. One team beat the other 3-2 but the match will be remembered for an absolute screamer by BRYAN SILVER, who beat 3 players before firing home a beauty from 20 yards or so. Even Steve Feiger said the goal was superb, and that's saying something coming from our own 'World Class' all-time leading goalscorer about someone else's goal! Bryan mused later: "For a change, Steve hasn’t exaggerated it WAS a cracker (even if I modestly say so myself!) Oh, by the way, our 'World Class' striker didn't score!
