FORTUNETELLER
News, views and everything TFFC by Nigel Kyte
Welcome to issue 33. The Cyril Anekstein Cup quarter-final stumbling block came back to haunt Temple Fortune for the sixth time as the First Team were eliminated by Redbridge A by 5-1.
Played in the winter sunshine at Gosling Sports Park in Welwyn Garden City, the First Team took the lead through Dan Orgel and had a great chance to make it 2-0. But the Premier Division visitors got their game together and came back strongly to pile on the misery for Fortune, scoring five times to take the tie. Manager Lee Fegan had little to say about his team's second diappointing cup exit in succession, commenting briefly: "Taking the positives out of today, there was no traffic on the A1 and the weather was nice!" Enough said!
The OLD BOYS TEAM extended their winning run to four matches for the first time since 2006 by defeating HENDON HARRIERS by 3-0 at The Hive in the MSFL Division 2. Temple Fortune were the better team and could have won the match more comfortably had numerous good chances been taken. The win avenged a 4-2 league defeat earlier in the season. After a goalless first half, Fortune deservedly took the lead through a Jonathan Dubiner header after which leading scorer Robert Botkai added two more goals. Full credit must go to the defence which has let in just one goal in four games a scrambled effort against Glenthorne C in the cup. Said a pleased David Goldberg: "In truth we should have won this match by a hatful, after missing so many chances. But it's another good win and there's some real self-belief in this team which is growing." The Club's all-time longest serving player, Peter Kyte, remarked: "It was one of the most solid, positive performances with all-round effort, that I've ever seen the Old Boys play!"

The SECOND TEAM had another match postponed, this time against L'Equipe in a MSFL Division 3 fixture.
DOUBLE-HEADERS INTRODUCED IN MSFL
With the adverse weather causing havoc to the fixture list, the MSFL have introduced double-headers to try to catch up and reduce the backlog. The First Team have three coming up and the Second Team two. Double-headers are two one-hour games, 30 minutes being played each way. The Masters League have avoided bringing in double-headers for the time being.
INTRODUCING TFFC'S FIRST GB MACCABIAH REPRESENTATIVE FOR 31 YEARS!
This Club has not had a player taking part in the GB Maccabiah Games squad since goalkeeper Paul Squires as long ago as 1982. Paul, father of current Second Team player Ollie, played in a representative 'trial' match but never made the final 22 which participated in the Games. Well, that is all about to change hopefully because, 31 years on, JONATHAN DUBINER, who plays in our Old Boys Team, has been selected for the Maccabiah Games squad for this year's event.
The 19th Maccabiah Games will be held in Israel from 17th July to 30th July, with the opening Ceremony scheduled for 18th July. This is a great honour for Jonathan and he kindly emailed me some information about his inclusion. In recognising a marvellous achievement, congratulations go to Jonathan Dubiner from all of us at TFFC.
Formerly with Bushey United, Jonathan Dubiner joined Temple Fortune in 2001, making 13 appearances for the First Team during season 2001/02. He scored his first goal for the Club in March 2002 against Hendon United in a 3-2 win. Jonathan continued playing for the First Team in midfield and as a very capable defender until the 2008/09 season, making 112 appearances plus one as sub, and scoring 10 goals. He was played in the team which reached the 2004 MSFL Barry Goldstein Cup Final at Wingate & Finchley FC. Jonathan moved to the Second Team for the 2010/11campaign and made 21 appearances, finishing on 22 games plus 5 sub (1 goal) for the Seconds in total. He made his debut for the Old Boys Team in 2007 and played in most of the Masters 'A' team's games during Fortune's one and only Division One season in 2008/09. A further 7 games the season after for the Old Boys was followed by a two-year spell playing for North London Raiders. Jonathan returned to play for the Old Boys again in the MMFL Division 2 and his current record for Temple Fortune (all teams) is 165 appearances (including 7 as sub) and 13 goals. This includes an appearance this morning against Hendon Harriers (the photo above is from that game) and one goal!

Jonathan, when did you first hear about all this?
"Around last April I received an email informing me about trials for the Maccabiah which were to take place in June. I thought I would go along although I felt that maybe it was something of a closed shop with most of the places possibly already decided."
What happened at that first session?
"At the first trial around 25 turned up I thought I played okay and was told that to be considered for selection I would have to attend at least one of the remaining two trials. Due to work I thought this may be difficult but I did make it to the next trial."
And how did it go at the next one?
"This time about 40 turned up (I think about 55-60 applied). Again I thought it went quite well."
What took place after that?
"I was unable to attend the last trial but about a week afterwards I received a letter telling me I had made the provisional squad of 22."
That must have been fantastic. How did things progress from there?
"Later on two or three people left the squad for personal reasons and a couple more were omitted. Out of the final 21-man squad 14 play either for London Maccabi Lions or Brady Maccabi."
Have the selectors looked at fitness?
"Since being selected I have had two fitness assessments. The results of the second one were much better than the first indicating how out of shape I must have been to start with! I have one more to come around May."
So what are you doing to improve your fitness?
"I have made an effort to try and get myself much fitter and now swim and play squash regularly."
How often do the Maccabiah squad meet up?
"Currently we get together three times a month. Once for a match and the other two occasions for training. As we get towards July the sessions will increase."
Jonathan, what does all this mean to you?
"I am extremely honoured to have been chosen to represent my country as it has taken me 46 years to do so! Hopefully I can help GB retain the gold medal they won four years ago."

CUT OUT THE DISSENT: KEEP IT ZIPPED
The fine for being cautioned for dissent remains £16. Everyone has seen the "Keep It Zipped" campaign so there is no excuse for collecting cautions for back-chatting the referee.

MASTERS REVIEW
DIVISION ONE
Southgate Harmen boosted their title hopes and significantly dented those of fellow challengers North London Raiders after a thrilling 4-3 victory at The Hive. Southgate trailed 3-0 before storming back to take the points. Simon Gold helped himself to a hat-trick, while Robbie Weber added another. Gary Cohen had scored two for Raiders.
DIVISION TWO
A Martin Seifert hat-trick and a penalty from Jon Holman gave leaders EDRS a 4-1 win over Ashlodge, with Vince Goodman getting Ashlodge's consolation.
But Glenthorne B remain just a point behind EDRS with two games in hand after their 4-1 victory over title rivals London Maccabi Lions, courtesy of strikes from Neil Richards, Adam Hart, Stuart Block and an own goal, while Marc Morris netted for Lions.
Meanwhile Temple Fortune had a comfortable 3-0 win over Hendon Harriers, with Robert Botkai's double and Jon Dubiner's strike scoring for Fortune.
St John's Wood Tigers maintained their excellent recent form to move into third spot with a 5-0 win over Marshside. Paul Herszaft scored a hat-trick, with Ian Cohen and an own goal completing the scoring.
