REPORT FOR SEASON 2019/20

As per usual, I have split my report into various categories and have included statistical comparisons with the 2018/19 and 2017/18 seasons. At the end will be a conclusion covering the 2019/20 season.

Membership: We had 27 Full Members in total (2018/19: 28; 2017/18: 39). Of these, 17 were from the First Team and 10 from the Old Boys Team (2018/19: 20, Old Boys Team 8; 2017/18: First Team 12, Old Boys Team 7). Casual Membership numbered 5 (2018/19: 2; 2017/18: 15) and 4 were from the First Team and 1 from the Old Boys Team. Regarding 200 Club Members, we had 11 in total, all from the Old Boys Team (2018/19: 10; 2017/18: 10).

Overall the club had a total of 43 members (2018/19: 40; 2017/18: 64). The total amount of membership fees collected was £2,775.00 (2018/19: £2,620.00; 2017/18: £3,463.00 – 3 teams).

The average membership fees paid were: Full £71.11 (normal fee £80) (2018/19: £73.84; 2017/18: £64.30), Casual £42.00 (normal fee £45) (2018/19: £40.00; 2017/18: £29.66), and 200 Club £58.63 (normal fee £60) (2018/19: £47.00; 2017/18: £51.00), giving an overall average of £64.53 per member (2018/19: £53.61; 2017/18: £54.10). This allowed for Early Payment discounts and reduced fees by agreement depending on an individual’s circumstances.

There were no membership fees refunded (2018/19: 0; 2017/18: 4).

Registrations: There were 30 MGBSFL registrations (2018/19: 36; 2017/18: 66 – 3 teams). The Old Boys Team had 25 players registered for the Masters League (2018/19: 25; 2017/18: 24). The Old Boys Team had to use 12 outside guests as allowed in the Masters League (2018/19: 11; 2017/18: 21).

Pitches: The First Team played 14 matches at Silver Jubilee Park (2018/19: 10; 2017/18: 11) and 1 cup tie at the Fursefield Leisure Centre in Potters Bar. The Old Boys Team continued to play at venues arranged by the Masters League.

Discipline: The First Team had 6 cautions (2018/19: 9; 2017/18: 17) and no sending offs (2018/19: 1; 2017/18: 3). The Old Boys Team had 1 caution, incidentally a guest player (2018/19: 1; 2017/18: 1). The Old Boys Team had no sending offs. Overall, the disciplinary record was 7 cautions and no sending off (2018/19: 10 cautions, 1 dismissal; 2017/18: 27 cautions, 3 dismissals – 3 teams), which is a welcomed improvement.

League fines: The First Team collected £120 in MGBSFL fines (2018/19: £60; 2017/18: £220 – 3 teams). The breakdown is as follows: First Team (3 fines) – player ineligibility (£40 each). The First Team management reimbursed the fines, with manager Simon Linden adding a further £40 on top which was used to cover three cautions in the last fixture v FC Team. The Old Boys Team collected a £20 MMFL fine, which was imposed for fielding one substitute player too many v Marshside.

Match subs collection: The First Team collected a very impressive £113.26 per match (2018/19: £109.08; 2017/18: £94.26), which included 25 matches plus the pre-season David Wolff 8-a-side Trophy. The Old Boys Team collected an average of £105.25 per match (2018/19: £96.80; 2017/18: £83.88), which is a record high for our Masters team. The match subs collected totalled £4,629 for two teams (2018/19: £4,070; 2017/18: £5,711). The breakdown is First Team £2,945 and the Old Boys Team £1,684 (2018/19: £1,452; 2017/18: First Team £2,168).

We can be grateful to Steven Black for implementing the iZettle payment device which certainly helped to maximise our subs income from the First Team, and also to Hilton Teper who once again was highly efficient in supervising the Old Boys Team collections. Both helped the Club bring in excellent income totals and I would like to thank them sincerely.

Events: The Club Awards Presentation event was scheduled for Sunday 10th May 2020 at Silver Jubilee Park for what would have been the sixth season running but had to be cancelled due to the pandemic situation. Therefore, the Jack Kyte Challenge Cup and the Founders’ Shield matches were cancelled. The awards have been ordered and will be presented when it is feasibly safe to do so, hopefully prior to the start of the 2020/21 season.

Equipment: The First Team wore the yellow and red kit sponsored by James Ryan of Ellis & Co for the
second season in succession. The Old Boys used their red and yellow striped kit with red shorts for the third season running. In storage are a number of spare playing kits including the Daniel Stewart set of shirts (yellow and red), the Founders’ shirts (red and yellow broad stripes), the all-yellow and navy Bekhors kit, and the Winckworth yellow and navy shirts (a full set of 14). There is also a set of 10 outfield Kingsleys shirts (yellow with the large navy ‘stars’ design) and a green/white Bekhor kit in storage too, plus a set of orange ex-Blizzard Storm shirts.

At the beginning of the season, I ordered more navy and yellow tracksuit tops carrying the embroidered 50 Years badge in the same style as those bought the season before.

Training: After the high expenditure for training/football at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre followed by the Powerleague in Mill Hill during season 2018/19, we dispensed with providing costly sessions.

Conclusion: I concluded at the end of the 2018/19 report that "we certainly must be more careful next season with a view of getting our finances back on track". This we achieved with prudent spending and improved income capacity, assisted by saving considerably on training costs, forfeitures and other heavy expenditure.

From an administration point of view, the season ran satisfactorily although marred by the First Team ineligible player matter which was a huge embarrassment for the Club. Then, a month before the end of the season, the coronavirus pandemic struck and the ensuing lockdown curtailed the campaign prematurely.
