REPORT FOR SEASON 2018/19
I have split my report into the usual categories and have included statistical comparisons with the 2017/18 and 2016/17 seasons. At the end will be a conclusion covering the 2018/19 season. The following key applies: *Three teams; ** two teams. Membership: We had 28 Full Members in total (2017/18: 39*; 2016/17: 30**). Of these, 20 were from the First Team and 8 from the Old Boys Team (2017/18: First Team 12, Second Team 20, Old Boys Team 7; 2016/17: First Team 21, Old Boys Team 9). Casual Membership numbered only 2 (2017/18: 15*; 2016/17: 4**) and both were from the Old Boys Team. Regarding 200 Club Members, we had 10 in total, 2 from the First Team and 8 from the Old Boys Team (2017/18: 10*; 2016/17: 11**). Overall the club had a total of 40 members (2017/18: 64*; 2016/17: 45**). The reduction compared to when we last ran two teams in 2016/17 was worth about £350 in lost membership income. The total amount of membership fees collected was £2,620 (2017/18: £3,463.00*; 2016/17: £2,678.00**). A sincere thank you to Steven Black who kindly waived his Quiz prize money of £50 and paid the Full membership fee. The average membership fees paid were: Full £73.84 (normal fee £75) (2017/18: £64.30; 2016/17: £70.60), Casual £40.00 (normal fee £40) (2017/18: £29.66; 2016/17: £16.25), and 200 Club £47.00 (normal fee £55) (2017/18: £51.00; 2016/17: £45.00), giving an overall average of £53.61 per member (2017/18: £54.10; 2016/17: £43.95). This allowed for Early Payment discounts and reduced fees by agreement depending on an individual’s circumstances. There were no membership fees refunded, (2017/18: 4; 2016/17: 0). Registrations: There were 36 MGBSFL registrations (2017/18: 66*; 2016/17: 34**). The Old Boys Team had 25 players registered for the Masters League (2017/18: 24; 2016/17: 24). The Old Boys Team had to use 11 outside guests as allowed in the Masters League (2017/18: 21; 2016/17: 0). Pitches: The First Team played 10 matches at Silver Jubilee Park (2017/18: 11; 2016/17: 4). We needed to purchase one additional pitch to stage the last home league match against Faithfold ‘C’ (played at their ground), which saved the Club over £120 compared to hiring SJP. The Old Boys Team continued to play at venues arranged by the Masters League. Discipline: The First Team had 9 cautions (2017/18: 17; 2016/17: 11) and 1 sending off (Josh Klepper) (2017/18: 3; 2016/17: 0). The Old Boys Team had 1 caution, incidentally a guest player (Nigel Conway) (2017/18: 1; 2016/17: 1). The Old Boys Team had no sending offs. Overall, the disciplinary record of 10 cautions and 1 sending off (two teams), compared to 27 and 3 respectively during 2017/18 (three teams), was a welcomed improvement. League fines: The First Team collected £60 in MGBSFL and Peter Morrison Trophy fines (2017/18: £220*; 2016/17: 0**) which was a vast improvement on the previous season. The breakdown is as follows: First Team (3 fines) 2 forfeitures (£25 each), 1 late team sheet (£10). For the first time in several seasons the Old Boys Team collected £10 in MMFL fines, which was imposed for postponing a match without permission. Match subs collection: The First Team collected a very impressive £109.08† per match (2017/18: £94.26†; 2016/17: £90.61), a welcomed increase. With match subs raised to £10 per match in line with the First Team, the Old Boys Team collected an average of £98.05 per match (2017/18: £83.88†; 2016/17: £82.52). The match subs collected totaled £4,070† for two teams (2017/18: £5,711*†; 2016/17: £5,167**). The breakdown is First Team £2,618† and the Old Boys Team £1,667† (2017/18: First Team £2,168†; Old Boys Team £1,510†). †Figures exclude the end-of-season match arranged by Michael Goldberg and the matches played at the Club Awards Presentation Event. I would like to thank all those who collected the subs mainly Steven and Hilton for bringing in this vital source of income. Events: At the time of writing this report (1st June 2019), the Club Awards Presentation event has been scheduled for Sunday 2nd June 2019 at Silver Jubilee Park for the fourth season running. The Jack Kyte Challenge Cup and the Founders’ Shield was decided on Sunday 9th June at SJP. At the end of 2018, we held an enjoyable lunch at the Adam & Eve in Mill Hill to commemorate the Club’s Golden Anniversary. Attended by 13 individuals, including MGBSFL Chairman David Wolff, it was successful. I would like to thank Tony Espinoza for his help in arranging the lunch and other social gatherings during the season. Two days after the Golden Anniversary lunch we revisited Princes Park for the Club’s fifth ‘pilgrimage’ back there. Although the attendance was low (only seven), those present had an enjoyable game on the very pitch where the Club’s embryonic kick-abouts took place in the mid-sixties. Equipment: The First Team wore a new yellow and red kit sponsored by James Ryan of Ellis & Co and supplied by Pendle Sportswear. The shirts carried an embroidered 50 Years badge. The Old Boys used their red and yellow striped kit with red shorts for the second season running. In storage we have numerous spare playing kits including the Daniel Stewart set of shirts (yellow and red), the Founders’ shirts (red and yellow broad stripes), the all-yellow and navy Bekhors kit, the Winckworth yellow and navy shirts (a full set of 14) and the set of red Ellis & Co shirts. There is also a set of 10 outfield Kingsleys shirts (yellow with the large navy ‘stars’ design) in storage. We have a green/white Bekhor kit in storage too, plus a set of orange ex-Blizzard Storm shirts. Prior to the beginning of the season, Lee Fegan and I ordered some navy and yellow tracksuit tops carrying the new embroidered 50 Years badge which looked very smart. We ordered a second batch which arrived in October. The Club subsidised the cost which came to just under £538, getting back £450 from the players. We stocked up on some footballs for the MGBSFL teams, whilst Hilton Teper continued to supply footballs for the Old Boys Team. A stock-take after the Club Presentation Event showed that there was a shortage in First Team socks. We do have sufficient shorts and socks to replenish any shortfall, rather than replace thereby reducing our expenditure for the 2019/20 season. Training: For the first time in six tears, the Club hired and paid for official training/football, initially at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre followed by the Powerleague in MIll Hill. Our expenditure for these was £1,201 in total, a record-high cost for training which surpassed the £1,100 we laid out in season 2012/13. After deciding to give four free sessions at Burnt Oak Leisure Centre in pre-season, we did bring in £355 from subs at Mill Hill Powerleague. Conclusion: From an administration point of view everything hinges on finances and for the first time for years we spent more than we brought in, which will be covered in the Treasurer’s Report. Although the season was less troublesome than the previous one, it is essential that as a Club we cover our expenditure and on this occasion we failed. Of course, there are mitigating reasons bringing in training for the first time since 2012/13, getting the 50 Years Book printed, defaulting games, playing fewer games and subsiding training tops, higher website hosting charges which all contributed but we certainly must be more careful next season with a view of getting our finances back on track.
