Formed in 1994, Temple Fortune Old Boys were effectively the pioneers of Maccabi veterans' football and played friendlies for several years prior to being founder members of the Maccabi Masters Football League in 1999. Always looking for friendlies, the Old Boys arranged several annual matches against a Maccabi Referees' team, starting at the end of 1995.

The first match was played at Bethune Park on 31st December 1995 and was refereed by TFFC Chairman Nigel Kyte, himself a long-serving MSFL referee. In a close-fought encounter, Fortune won 2–1 thanks to goals by Maurice Martin and a Steve Levy penalty. Steve Conway, a former Fortune player, netted the solitary goal for the men in black! Nigel recalls the fixture: "It was played in very good spirit but the banter I got from the referees was hilarious... they did not stop moaning and whinging for 90 minutes and contested every decision – and I mean every decision, even those obvious ones not requiring a decision!"

"And when I gave Temple Fortune a stonewall penalty," he mused, "the good-natured 'dissent' delayed the kick for ten minutes! It was good fun and everyone enjoyed the occasion."

A second match did not follow untl two seasons later where, again at Bethune Park, the two teams shared an enjoyable 2–2 draw. The very next season, match number three was contested on the astroturf at Whitefield School and on this occasion TF Old Boys ran out comfortable 8–3 winners, with Steve Feiger scoring the series' only hat-trick..

Season 1999/00 saw the fourth game played at Woodhouse College in Finchley and Fortune won again by 2–0 on the astroturf surface. Another gap of two years followed before the two sides could arrange a fifth meeting and this took place at West Hendon Playing Fields. But on this occasion, a Tim Taylor-inspired Referees' XI won 3–1 to win the contest for the first time. Match number six was held on 20th December 2002 at Childs Hill Park and an entertaining 3–3 draw was played out.

Sadly, with the Maccabi Masters League growing in size which meant fewer vacant dates available, the series against the Referees was not arranged again and was phased out.
